# Preference page

The preference page is where a contact manages what they get from you. They can fix their
details and choose which lists they're on. Every email footer links to it with **update your
preferences**, and the unsubscribe page can offer it too.

Each link is personal to the contact, so they don't need to log in.

Open it from **Settings → Preference page**.

## What they can change

**Details they can fix** picks which fields appear at the top of the page, above the lists:

- **Prefix**, **First name**, **Last name**, **Job title**
- **Address line 1**, **Address line 2**, **City**, **State or region**, **Postcode**
- **Date of birth**

Leave it empty and the page only shows lists.

The email address is never editable. It's how the CRM knows who the contact is. To change
it, the contact has to ask you.

## Lists they can choose

Every list is shown here with a switch:

- **On** — the list appears on the preference page, and contacts can join or leave it there.
- **Off** — the list stays private. Contacts never see it, and only you can add people to it.

The switch saves straight away — you don't need **Save changes**. If you have more than eight
lists, use **Search lists…** to find one.

If you have no lists yet, the section says **No lists yet.** and links to
[Contacts → Lists](/contacts/lists/).

:::note[Private lists are left alone]
When a contact saves the page, only the lists shown on it change. Their private lists stay
exactly as they were.
:::

## Afterwards

**Where they land** is the page a contact goes to after they save their preferences or
unsubscribe. Enter a full address, like a thank-you page on your site. Leave it empty and they
see a short message on the same page instead: **Your preferences are saved** or **You have
been unsubscribed**.

## How it connects to unsubscribing

On [Opt-in & unsubscribe](/settings/opt-in/), **When someone clicks Unsubscribe** decides
whether the unsubscribe page offers the preference page:

- With **Let them choose**, the unsubscribe page links to **Choose which emails you get
  instead**, and the confirmation afterwards links to **Choose what you hear about instead**.
- With **Unsubscribe from everything**, those links don't appear.

The **update your preferences** link in the email footer works either way.

:::tip
Offer a few clear lists — "Product news", "Monthly newsletter", "Events" — on the preference
page. People who can turn off one topic are less likely to unsubscribe from everything.
:::

## If a link has expired

If the link in an email is no longer valid, the contact sees **That link has expired** and
is asked to contact you for a new one.

## Saving

**Details they can fix** and **Where they land** are saved with **Save changes** in the bar at
the top. The list switches save as soon as you flip them.
